Sgt. Robert Doil Cherry Obituary
Sgt. Robert Doil Cherry January 11, 1947 - August 20, 2012 On January 11, 1947, Ralph and Edna Cherry received a gift from God~a baby boy. Bob was born in Bakersfield, California. He attended Standard Elementary School and graduated from North High in 1965. As a child Bob was eager to work and do whatever he could to help out. His first job was with the Oildale News, where he earned two silver dollars - a really 'big deal' back then! When he was 12 he joined the Boy Scouts of America (troop 11) and achieved the rank of First Class before transferring to the Explorers. After graduating from north high, Bob joined the United States Air Force on June 15, 1965. He attended Electronic Repair as part of his training and was stationed at Edwards, AFB for two years. From there he was sent to Vietnam and was assigned to the Army as a Forward Air Controller. He was in all the 'Big Battles' in 1968 and promoted to Sargent on February 14, 1968. He was honorably discharged on February 14, 1969. While attending Bakersfield College Bob worked as a security guard and in the Construction trade. He was a faithful member of Oildale Assembly of God, where he met and married Laurel Shader on June 14, 1975. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Ann. Bob moved his family to San Jose where his training landed him a very good job with Memorex Corp. Later, Bob and Laurel moved to Fort Collins, Colorado to care for her family, who were having health problems. Agent Orange had begun taking its toll on Bob many years earlier, but he continued doing all he could for his family and the many friends he had made in fort Collins. On August 20, 2012, Bob was called to his heavenly home by his Lord Jesus Christ. His parents and brother-in-law Gordon Grant preceded him. Bob is survived by his wife, Laurel; daughter, Elizabeth and fiance, Nathaniel Nerode of Ithica, New York; sisters, Merle Grant of Wheatland, California and Linda Forkade and husband Chuck; brothers, Wayne and wife Carla all of Bakersfield, Jim and wife Kathy of Tehachapi, California and Russell of Wasco, California. www.bakersfield.com/obits
