Sherlo Dean Shively

Sherlo Dean Shively Obituary
Sherlo Shively went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 19, 2015. Sherlo was born on December 8, 1926 in Hughson, CA. He moved with his family at a young age to Fellows, CA where he grew up on an oil lease. He attended Midway Grammar School, three years at Taft High School and graduated from East High. Sherlo met the love of his life, Ila Flora, while attending LaVerne College; they married in 1949. While in college, Sherlo sang with the popular male quartet, "The Melodiairs" touring the States as ambassadors for the college. His college education was interrupted while he served in the Army in Italy as a medic. Sherlo and Ila moved back to Bakersfield in 1950 to pursue careers in education and start their family.
Sherlo spent his career working for Bakersfield City School District, serving as principal at Mt. Vernon, Casa Loma, Lincoln Jr. High, Noble, Pioneer Drive and Chipman Jr. High. After retiring from BCSD, he worked for 11 years at Cal State Bakersfield as Field Supervisor and instructor for the Education Department. Sherlo was an active member of the Church of the Brethren, directing the choir for over 50 years. He served on the National Deacon's Cabinet, was District Moderator for California and Arizona, and was involved in numerous other capacities. Sherlo was active in civic professional organizations including Westchester Kiwanis (lifetime member), STEPS where he served on the Board and as CEO, and multiple educational associations including Phi Delta Kappa and ACSA where he served in various leadership roles.
Sherlo had a great love for mountain hiking; he hiked the Sierras and the Napali Coast of Kauai, Hawaii many times. He loved Hawaii and he and his wife traveled there over 30 times.
Sherlo is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ila; his son David and wife, Janie; daughter Diane McConnell and husband, Jim; son-in-law Ted Blockley; grandchildren Kyle and Sabrina Shively, Seth and Kristin McConnell, Brad and Courtney McConnell, Annie Blockley, and his great-grandchildren Cecilia Blockley and Cullen McConnell. Welcoming him to Heaven are, among many, his father and mother, Carl and Anna Shively, sister Alveta Ross, daughter Karen Blockley and grandson Kevin Shively. We are grateful for the loving care he received from the staff at The Grove at Rosewood Retirement Community.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sherlo's name to "The Shively House" at the University of LaVerne, 1950 Third Street, LaVerne, CA 91750. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 29 at 2:00 PM at Bakersfield National Cemetery, 30338 E. Bear Mountain Rd, Arvin, CA.
