Shirley Ann Harris June 27, 1941 - Sept. 17, 2013 Shirley Ann Harris went home to her Father in Heaven at the young age of 72 on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, after a battle with cancer. She never gave up and never complained, but maintained a brave and hopeful outlook until the end. Her faith in God and prayer were always a source of strength in her life, especially during this last year. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and a wonderful Christian example to friends and family. Her gracious ways and caring spirit were recognized by all. Shirley was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to the late Roy Kenneth Young and Dorothy Martha Ann Young, and was the youngest of their four girls. After graduating from high school, she briefly attended Harding University before meeting her husband of 51 years, Wendell Buford Harris. They moved to Bakersfield in 1977, where they became active members of Westside Church of Christ, and Shirley worked as the church secretary for 18 years before retiring in 1998. She was involved with many church activities, including teaching classes, singing in the Praise Team, and overseeing the resource room. She was also a member of the Bakersfield Symphony Assoc. where she served as President. Shirley is survived by her husband, Wendell; their three children, daughter, Deidre and Kyle Berry of Florence, AL; son, Kyle and Angelia Harris of Bakersfield; and son, Bryan and Jenny Harris of Bakersfield; 8 grandchildren who knew her as "Mimi," grandsons, Justin, Dylan, and Cory Harris; granddaughters, Alex and Andi Berry; and grandsons, Kell, Shay, and Jace Harris; her sister, Lora and Earl Edwards of Henderson, TN; and her dog, Pumpkin. She will be deeply missed and leaves a void that can never be filled. The family wants to express their thanks to Dr. Vinh-Linh Nguyen, Tina, and staff at Bakersfield Hematology Oncology for the treatment and concern shown to Shirley during her illness; and also to recognize the loving care and support given by Dawn, Diana, and Maria from Mercy Hospice Care in her final days. A memorial service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held at Westside Church of Christ on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at 5:00 p.m. Reception to follow.
