Shirley Ann Taylor January 24, 1936 ~ August 18, 2012 Shirley was born in Washington, D.C., as Shirley Ann Herrell, the youngest of thirteen children. Shirley and William were married in 1958 and shared over 40 years of marriage. During their marriage, Shirley and William had three children. After giving birth to her first child, Patricia Ann, in Washington, D.C., the couple spent time living in Memphis, Tennessee, and Atlanta, Georgia, before settling in Bakersfield in 1967. Once settled in Bakersfield, Shirley and William expanded their family to include two sons, William McDowell, Jr. and Robert Charles. Shirley was a devout Catholic who devoted her life to raising her children and making a comfortable home for her family. Shirley was a great cook and was best known for her holiday sweet potatoes and creamed peas. Shirley loved music and enjoyed dancing. She and her husband, William, were members of the Bakersfield Elks Club for many years, where she enjoyed dancing to live music. If asked what her greatest accomplishment in life was, Shirley would say her children. Rest in peace, Mom. We love you. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, William, and her many siblings.
