Shirley D. Sills Obituary
Shirley D. Sills December 12, 1921 ~ November 11, 2012 Shirley was born December 12, 1921, in Napoleonville, LA, to Leon J. Delaune and Ida Blanchard. She was their 7th child and 6th daughter. Shirley married OC Sills of Clarence, LA, in 1942, a handsome young Naval officer, while she served America as a Navy WAVE. In 1965 Shirley and OC moved to Bakersfield, CA, with their five children. Shirley will be remembered for her infectious smile, twinkling blue eyes, and youthful, playful sprit. She loved, music, dancing, Easter egg hunts, poker games, family holidays, and cooking for her loved ones. And what a great "Southern Cook" she was! Animals were always a part of her life, beginning with her childhood pet monkey, Pincho, who was the talk of the town. She was also known to have grocery store checkers spot a snake in her purse at checkout! Dogs, cats, horses, goats, and many other animals found ways to make it into Shirley's heart. Riding carousels, going to amusement parks, and embarking on spontaneous activities were always a part of her life. She loved having fun and laughing! A true Southern Belle has gone to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. Shirley was preceded in death by OC Sills, her husband of 63 years; daughters, Nancy E. Johnson and Gayle S. McNutt; son, Dr. Michael C. Sills; brother, Emile Delaune; and sisters, Vivian Ross, Ida Mae George, Elaine Brien Noel, Doris Catrou, and Olga Kraemer Truxillo. She is survived by son, Robert L. Sills and his wife, Vicki Sills of Bakersfield; granddaughter, Ashley Lomas and her husband, Dave Lomas of San Francisco; daughter, Vicki Haentjens of Pismo Beach; granddaughters, Erin, Marina, and Cristina Haentjens; grandson, Loy Johnson and his wife, Diane Johnson of Troutdale, Oregon; granddaughter, Lisa Nichols and her husband, Kurt Nichols; and grandson, Jason McNutt, all of Bakersfield; as well as many great- and great-great-grandchildren.
