"A life well lived by a woman much loved" Shirley Joan Reagan peacefully passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016 at age 89. Her family was at her side. She resided in Bakersfield since 1990 when she and her husband, Eugene, moved from Southern California.
Shirley was born in Chicago, IL in 1927, the middle daughter of Melvin and Muriel Irwin. In 1938 the family moved near Los Angeles where she attended Alhambra High School and met her future husband, Gene. The high school sweethearts married in 1946 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Arcadia, CA and soon settled in West Covina where for 36 years they raised their 6 children.
She is preceded by Gene, her husband of 55 years, grandson Matthew and great-granddaughter Makaela. Shirley is survived by her two sisters, Phyllis Anning and Melva Head; her children, David, Christopher, Linda, Loretta, Leslie and Timothy; two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law; 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was a woman of faith and a gifted conversationalist with an uncanny memory for details. We will miss her counsel, her grace and her example but we will smile because she had lived and had a profound effect on our lives.
Viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. at Doughty-Calhoun-O'Meara Funeral Chapel, 1100 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield 93301.
A Requiem Mass celebrating her life, faith and legacy will be held at St. Michael's Chapel in Bakersfield on Thursday, April 14th at 11:00 a.m. preceded by Recitation of the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. She will be placed next to Gene in a private interment at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Community Hospice in Modesto, CA. [Alexander Cohen Hospice House] at (www.hospiceheart.org) DOUGHTY-CALHOUN-O'MEARA FUNERAL DIRECTORS
