Sofiea Sue Bussell Clerico Obituary
Sofiea Sue Bussell Clerico December 30, 1938 - September 17, 2013 Sofiea Sue Bussell Clerico, 74 of Bakersfield, CA died Sep 17th, 2013 after a brief struggle with illness. Born in Bakersfield on Dec 30, 1938. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Julie Susanne and survived by her sons Kevin John and Erin Robert Clerico. A strong, intelligent woman and out-spoken liberal activist, Sofiea lived life on her terms with grace and humor through trial and triumph. On what was to be her first day as Director of Human Resources at Belridge Farms in 1972, an auto-accident left her a paraplegic. Ignoring her prognosis of six months to live, Sofiea returned to mothering and meaningful work. After her injury Sofiea ran for city council nearly defeating an incumbent, ran public relations and event promotion for her brother Alfred's 'Al Bussell Ranch,' owned a jewelry store, published a local newspaper called 'The Village News' for twelve years, became an activist and online commentator helping to block mega-dairies in Kern County and a noted local writer with her brother's WWII service among her topics. Sofiea's legacy is an example of courage and strength in the face of the longest odds, of how tolerance and enlightenment can erase ignorance and hatred, and of how with love and compassion and a smile and a few kind words one can mend hearts and inspire greatness. A remembrance will be held Saturday, Sep 28th at 2PM at the home of Norman Bussell and Elaine McNearney, call 661-578-8840 for more information. www.bakersfield.com/obits
