Sonia Ann (Popel) Simrin Obituary
The daughter of Abraham and Bertha Popel was born on January 12, 1938, and passed away on September 19, 2014.
A lifetime resident of Bakersfield, Sonia graduated from Bakersfield High then received her bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Southern California. After college, Sonia was a social worker for the Kern County Welfare Department.
She spent the rest of her life making the lives of other people better. Most of her professional career was spent helping people find jobs. She was an employment counselor for Snelling and Snelling, then owned and managed Rand Personell until her retirement. Matching people with jobs wasn't Sonia's only matchmaking skill. Many met the love of their life through her. Sonia married Stanley Simrin in 1964, becoming mother to his four children. Sonia and Stanley Simrin were both leaders in Bakersfield's Jewish community. Few people have touched more lives than Sonia Simrin. When she celebrated her 75th birthday last year, it was hard work narrowing the guest list to her closest 250 friends.
Sonia was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brother Stanley Popel. She is survived by her children Steve Simrin, Susie Easley, Amy Knight and Andy Simrin; her grandchildren Echo Easley, Ben Simrin and Jonathan Simrin; and her great-grandchildren Peyton Kniffen and Emerson Kniffen. Sonia earned the nickname GG when she became a great-grandmother, but everybody knows, she was great at everything.
Her funeral was held on Monday September 22nd, at Temple Beth El at 1p.m., with graveside following the service at Greenlawn on River Blvd.
