Stanley Irwin Simrin

1929 - 2009 Obituary Condolences
Stanley Simrin passed away peacefully on February 24, 2009. Born in The Bronx, New York on November 3, 1929, Simrin moved to California in 1960. Simrin was a pharmacist at the time, but had always dreamed of being an attorney. He sent away for a correspondence course he found advertised on a matchbook cover and quickly rose to prominence as one of Kern County's most renowned criminal defense attorneys. Simrin served as president of the Kern County Bar Association and was instrumental in organizing high school mock trial competition in Kern County. He coached several teams to the finals of the annual state tournament in Sacramento. Simrin, a Jewish scholar, taught weekly Torah classes at Temple Beth for 15 years until his death. He was a lifetime member of the temple's Board of Directors and served three terms as its president. In 2005, the Criminal Defense Section of the Kern County Bar Association honored Simrin with its Atticus Finch Award for his outstanding accomplishments in the practice of criminal defense law. Simrin is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Sonia Simrin. He is also survived by his children, Steve Simrin and his wife, Shelley Simrin, Susie Easley, Amy Knight and her husband, John Knight and Andy Simrin and his wife, Miriam Erickson. Simrin has three grandchildren, Echo Kniffen and her husband, Brian Kniffen, Ben Simrin and Jonathan Simrin; and two great-grandchildren, Payton and Emerson Kniffen. Simrin is also survived by his sister, Tyna Strenger and her husband, Sam Strenger; and his nieces, Lisa Wenter and her husband, Russ Wenter, and Marty Weinberg and her husband, Mike Weinberg. Simrin's longtime law partner, Don Moloughney, recently told the Californian that Simrin wanted the world to be a better place for him having been in it. As Moloughney observed, "He has accomplished that." Simrin's funeral service will be held at Temple Beth El at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 26, followed by a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. at Greenlawn Cemetery, 3700 River Boulevard.
