Stephen James Ermigarat Obituary
Stephen James Ermigarat, 62, was tragically taken away from us on July 18 , 2015. He passed away doing what he loved: spending a Saturday morning working outdoors at his childhood home.
Steve was born on May 26, 1953 in Bakersfield, California to Pete and Eva Ermigarat. He lived his entire upbringing with his parents and three sisters on a quaint ranch-style home located in Greenfield. Steve's youth consisted of performing farm-related chores like chopping cotton, irrigating the soil, feeding the animals, and driving the tractor. He attended West High School and graduated in 1971. Within one week of graduating high school, he ventured into his first job as a bank teller for Greenfield State Bank at the mere age of eighteen. This initial job would be the start of a successful 44 yearlong career in the banking industry. Steve continued his education at Cal State Bakersfield and graduated in 1975, followed by an MBA program at Seattle Pacific University.
Steve's track record as a banker proved to be an impressive one. He worked for numerous banks including California Republic Bank, First Interstate, Bank of Stockdale, Citizens Business Bank, and eventually finding his home at Bank of the Sierra in 2008. His legacy as a local banker spanned many different duties as a branch manager, loan officer, and eventually working his way up to Vice President. It is worth noting that Steve's close relationship with clients was evident in their commitment to the bank wherever Steve was working-even if it meant moving banks.
His favorite activities included working with MidState Development Corporation, serving as the banker for Kern County Sportsman Night, and volunteering at the Garces Gala. Steve's most beloved activity of all, though, was barbequing for his family. He was an excellent cook who mastered his art from recipes handed down by his father, Pete. Steve loved to enjoy elaborate home-cooked meals every Sunday with his children. This tradition made Sunday his favorite day of the week. As a true Basque, Steve's pride and joy was to grow grapes and produce his much-loved wine.
Steve was predeceased by a number of very special people: his father Pete Ermigarat; parents-in-law Bob and Betty Gorman; brother-in-law Steve Thorne; and nephew Evan Harris.
Steve is survived by his mother Eva Ermigarat; his godmother Catherine Ansolabehere; his daughters Emily Cornelson, her husband, Curtis, and their daughter, Steve's first grandchild, Grace; Katy Ermigarat and her boyfriend Bryan; the mother of their children, Maripat Ermigarat (Gorman) and her sister Meg Denio, as well as Meg's children Duncan Harris, his wife Kendra and their daughter Addilyn, and Lauren Harris; his sisters and their families: Cheryl Pokett, her husband Danny, and their children Nicole and Christopher; Joan Casey, her husband Steve, and her children Eric and Natalie Thorne; Anna Dezember, her husband Brent, and their children Michelle, Suzanne Usaj and her husband Nick, Amy, and Sarah.
Celebration of the Rosary and Funeral Mass honoring Steve will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 9:30 am at St. Francis Church, 900 H. Street, Bakersfield CA. Burial will be immediately after at Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery, 2739 Panama Lane, Bakersfield.
