Sylvia Kirkland Obituary
Sylvia Kirkland December 24, 1934 - October 14, 2012 Sylvia was born on Christmas Eve, 1934 to Clyde and Reid Groves in Memphis, Tennessee. They moved to Bakersfield in 1948 where she attended East High School, graduating in 1952. She met and married Tom Sawyer in 1954 and they had a daughter Kelle. In 1960 she met and married Al Kirkland and they had two daughters, Leslee and Melanie. Sylvia worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, Tenneco West and the Kern County Library where she retired in 2009. Sylvia was one of the hardest working and most dependable people you would know. She was the family "rock". Her kids and grandkids were her greatest joy in life and she was their #1 fan. She attended every athletic event, cheer competition, dance recital, awards ceremony and even very loud concerts like Airband. She was also a Girl Scout leader, and a seamstress of all costumes. She had a knack of always putting others before her. We were all so very lucky to have had her as a mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She touched the lives of many, was loved by all and will be missed by everyone. Sylvia's life was cut short by a massive heart attack on Sunday, October 14th. She was preceded in death by her parents Reid and Clyde Groves, her brothers Jack and Bill Groves and her sister Clynell Fedrick who passed away just six weeks prior. She is survived by her daughters and their families, Kelle and Jack Hannaman and their two children Makenna and Jake, Leslee and Cliff Joseph and their daughter Colby, and Melanie Kirkland and her daughter Peyton. Also, two very dear friends, Phyllis Yacopetti and Dessa Meyers, along with many other family members and dear friends. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, October 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Christ's Church of the Valley, 13701 Stockdale Hwy. www.bakersfield.com/obits
