Terry Donn Lee Obituary
Terry Donn Lee, 47, of Bodfish, CA and formerly Bakersfield, CA. entered into this world in Houston, Texas on December 2nd, 1966 to Don Stuart Lee and Patty Sue Magee. He passed away after illness on August 5th, 2014. Terry spent his youngest years as a promising baseball pitcher with raw talent that was being watched by college scouts as young as 10 years old. As he grew his interests changed and he walked away from baseball, although his love for the game never diminished. Terry was never a huge fan of multiple sports, but will be remembered as an never wavering fan of both the San Francisco 49ers and the San Francisco Giants. In 1980, Terry along with his Dad and Brother Jon moved to Bakersfield. Terry would recall how he tried to fit into California life after arriving by having his Dad purchase 501 jeans and Izod shirts for him to wear. His efforts didn't go unnoticed, although his Texan accent always gave him away.
At 18 Terry married Lisa Sperry, the girl who would turn out to be his best friend until the time of his passing. Although apart for many years, their friendship, bond and commitment to each other remained true to the very end. Terry and Lisa found a mutual love for Air Cooled VWs. He was actively involved in the car club VDubs Ltd. where Terry served as Vice President. He was always the biggest kid in the neighborhood. Many days each week children would be at the door asking, "Can Terry play?" and play he would. Whether it was a game of ball, a water fight or just sitting in the yard with the kids talking, he could always make the time fun for them all. He even had a way of getting them to help him work in the yard or clean the garage by making it a contest.
After an injury at 26, Terry needed to find something to keep him busy as well as a way to pass time on the days he wasn't feeling well. Bring on the fishing and carpentry. If there was water, Terry had a pole in it. He loved to cook, so preparing and sharing the days catch always made him proud. Terry was also a perfectionist so when he took up carpentry, it was a perfect fit. He started with small things and worked his way up to cabinetry. He pleased and delighted all he did work for whether it was a gift or order from family or friends or a stranger who would find him through word of mouth. An illness slowed him down a couple of years ago, but it never lessened the amount of effort and detail he put into each and every project he did.
Terry is preceded in death by his grandparents as well as both his Dad Don and Mom Patty and his two loving dogs, Ratso & Gumption. He is survived by his "Big Brother and Idol" Jon Lee, his "Best Friend and Wife of 20 Years" Lisa Lee, and his "Mother-in-Law and Stand In Mom" Cheryl Sperry, all of Bakersfield.
Terry's huge heart of gold and ability to show compassion, empathy and support to both friends and strangers will be missed by many. He also had the gift of seeing the positive and strength in others that he many times struggled to see in himself.
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Saturday August 23rd, 2014 from 1pm to 3pm at Narducci's Cafe, 622 E. 21st St., Bakersfield, CA. 93305
