THOMAS H. LOCKARD

1934 - 2016 Obituary Condolences
On Tuesday, September 20, 2016, T. H. Lockard was called to be with his Lord and Savior. He was surrounded by his family and died peacefully at home. He was born in a small farming community in Texas to his father, Thomas H. Lockard Sr. and his mother Birdie Bray Lockard on January 18, 1934. T. H. was the youngest of eleven children (all of whom are deceased). Because of the early death of his father, the great depression, and the dust bowl in the southwestern part of the United States, his family had to give up their farm and move to California where the jobs were. First, they moved to Shafter, CA and then to Bakersfield, CA.
In 1957, T. H. married the love of his life, Janis Laffin. Together they have three children, Greg, Lynn and Lori and four grandchildren, Jennifer, Grant, Natalie and Daniel, and a special son-in-law, Craig Gordon, all of whom he loved and enjoyed so much. He adored his many nieces and nephews, his amazing sister and brother-in-law, Lorie and Tom Fox,
their children and grandchildren, Julie and Richard, Ryan and Michael Morosa. He also was blessed by his many dinners and loving care from Brian and Marilyn (niece) Henderson.
When WWII began, T.H. was very proud to say all of his brothers and brothers- in- law joined the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy or the U.S. Air Force. Most of them were involved in combat. Fortunately, all returned alive and well. T. H. and two of his brothers were too young for WWII. Later they volunteered for the draft and served in the U.S. Army.
After his tour in the U.S. Army, where he served in Berlin, Germany, T.H. returned to Bakersfield to graduate from Bakersfield College and then to San Jose State University where he received a B.S. Degree in Business Management.
He attended Bakersfield High School and Bakersfield College where he excelled in football and basketball. At Bakersfield High School he quarterbacked the Drillers to a Valley Championship in football. In 2009 he was honored to be inducted into the Driller Football Hall of Fame. At Bakersfield College, he quarterbacked the Renegades to a National Junior College Championship at Pasadena, CA by winning the 1953 Junior Rose Bowl. At Bakersfield College, he was honored to receive the Sam Lynn Trophy, which was awarded for excelling in two or more sports.
T.H. spent most of his working life in the securities business in Bakersfield (42 years). He often spoke very highly of his friends and clients and was very appreciative of their business and friendships.
He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, served on the Bakersfield College Foundation and formerly, a member of Stockdale Country Club and later Seven Oaks Country Club where he enjoyed golf and tennis with his many friends.
Services will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016, at 11 am at First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th Street, Bakersfield, CA. 93301. The family wishes to thank Bakersfield Community Hospice and Agape In-Home Care.
