Valois Compere Johnson Obituary
Valois Compere Johnson "Val" 1925-2013 God has watched over her all these years - now she has been called to join Him. Val passed away on February 2, 2013 surrounded by her family and full of peace. Val was born March 3, 1925 in San Francisco to Hal and Frances (Hanson) Compere. Growing up her grandparents had a cabin down the highway in Pedro Point. It was a quiet pre-war world of wild blackberries, crashing waves in the little bay and magnificent mountains to explore. Val attended San Francisco schools and graduated from Lincoln High School, Fall 1942. Afterwards she attended City College and SF State. Not unusual for the time, her uncle brought home a young shipmate in early 1945 as they were returning from 2 1/2 years in the South Pacific. Happily on May 17, 1945 Valois Compere of San Francisco and Kenneth Johnson of E. Providence, Rhode Island married in St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, LA. Two lucky people started living their dreams. As the war ended they settled first in Rehoboth, MA., then a year later moved to Orange County (Santa Ana) where they raised their family. Val loved being a homemaker and her house was full of smells from the kitchen. Her gardens were her special life-long love where she spent many hours creating colorful retreats. Together Val and Ken played golf from Hawaii to New England and made life-long friends in their bridge groups. For thirty-seven years in Bakersfield Val played bridge each Thursday afternoon with the same, but dwindling, group of lady friends. As Ken's success grew at Southern California Gas Company they moved from Santa Ana to Ventura in 1965, finally settling in Bakersfield in 1975. Val is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, Kenneth, along with their children Deborah Dormire (Roger) of Healdsburg, CA. and Rodney (Margarita) of Bakersfield and four grandchildren; Andrea Faye (Shawn) of Ventura, Samantha Smith of Morgan Hill, Kenneth Johnson II of Bakersfield and Rebecca Johnson attending Stephen F. Austin State College in Texas; and a cousin Kenneth (Cathy) Hanson of Los Alamitos, CA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 10AM in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th Street, Bakersfield, CA with a family burial following at Hillcrest Memorial Park. www.bakersfield.com/obits
