Vashti Ellen Ruth (Ginger) Sherrill

1932 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Vashti Ellen Ruth (Ginger) Sherrill Obituary
Vashti (Ginger) Ellen Ruth Sherrill March 9, 1932 - May 22, 2013 Ginger was born Vashti Ellen Ruth Moak on March 9, 1932 in Hillsboro, Texas to Elizabeth and Charles Moak. She lived in Texas until her teens when she moved with her family to Bakersfield, California. After she turned 18 she went to Oklahoma where she met the love of her life, Gene. He always said that God sent an angel to Oklahoma to save him and teach him what family was about. They were married two and a half months after meeting. The couple moved to San Diego, California while Gene served in the US Navy and started their family with a son. After Gene's service the family settled in Bakersfield where Ginger's family lived. A second child, a daughter, was soon born and the family was complete. Ginger began many years of camping trips to the beach, the Red Woods and Yosemite, Disneyland and eventually traveling the world. When her children began school, Ginger found her calling. After serving on the Harris PTA she was encouraged by her mentor to get a teaching credential and she did. She began teaching at Emerson Middle School, then became a program specialist at Sierra Middle School, earned her Master's degree and Administrative credential and became a principal in the Bakersfield City School District. She served as principal at Mckinley Elementary School where she started the Environmental Science Magnet Program and then transferred to Horace Mann Elementary School. She was a member of the Bakersfield City School District team for 30 years. During her retirement she was active in the California Retired Teachers Association. As President of CRTA she helped establish a grant program for beginning teachers that continues today. While retired she began a second career in education at the university level. She worked for National University's Educational Program for 12 years. She retired at 79 and allowed Gene to finally travel with her. She was proud of her children and grandchildren. However, her great-grandchildren stole her heart. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Elizabeth Moak. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Gene; two sisters, Charlene and her husband Wayne Knudsen of Coeur d'Alene, ID and Donna and her husband Glen Worrell; son, Ron and his wife Carol Sherrill; daughter, Sandy Craig and her life partner Jo McCauley. Also, left to cherish her memory are grandchildren, Nikki Stiles and husband Jason; Patrick Sherrill and wife Amy; Ray Craig of Wewoka, OK and his wife Sherry. And the two joys of her life her great grand children, Brady Sherrill and Brooklyn Stiles as well as her step-great-grandchildren, Malaki, Chloe, and Corie. She will be greatly missed by her family, numerous friends, and colleagues. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM in the chapel at Hillcrest Memorial Park. Services will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at Hillcrest Memorial Park at 1:00 PM. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall of Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Avenue. Donations may be made in Ginger's name to CRTA New Teacher Grant Program, 3218 Christmas Tree Lane, Bakersfield, CA 93306. www.bakersfield.com/obits
