Velma Marie Shrider

1927 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Velma Marie Shrider Obituary
Velma Marie Shrider April 16, 1927 - June 16, 2012 Velma Marie Goss Shrider passed away peacefully at home on June 16, 2012, surrounded by her family. The fifth of eight children, Velma was born to Leonard and Ludie Goss on April 16, 1927, in Fanshawe, Oklahoma. The family moved in 1942 to San Francisco, CA. Soon after, Velma lied about her age to find work in a shipyard as a real-life "Rosie the Riveter." In the waning days of WWII, she attended a Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys dance, where she met Kenny Shrider, a handsome, wavy-haired sailor. They married on May 11, 1946, and moved to Kenny's hometown of Glenford, Ohio. In 1963, the couple moved their growing family to Bakersfield, where Kenny and Velma would live the rest of their lives. They remained happily wed until Kenny's death in 1977. Kind and loving and born with a servant's heart, Velma was all about family and excelled in her role as homemaker. Her world revolved around her children and grandchildren, each of whom will miss her biscuits and chocolate gravy, fried chicken, the embroidered pillowcases and baby quilts she made as gifts, and her absolute unconditional love. Velma was preceded in death by husband, Kenny; daughter, Sandy Harger; and granddaughter, Holly Shrider. She is survived by her sons and their wives, Danny and Marylee Shrider, Gary and Shirley Shrider, and Joe and Lisa Shrider. She was a doting grandmother to Gene Harger, Katie and Travis David, Jessi and Jesse Peralta, Carson Shrider and Garrett Shrider. She loved her great-grandchildren, Chance and Leah Short and Adrian Peralta. Her youngest great-grandchild, one -year-old Austyn Peralta, was the joy of her final months. Velma is also survived by younger brother, Leon and wife Delores; brother-in-law, Larry Shrider and wife, Brenda; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends in California, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Ohio. Velma was a warm and gracious presence in our lives. We will always miss her, but are comforted by the knowledge that this godly woman is now rejoicing in the embrace of loved ones and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 3700 River Blvd. The Shrider family would like to thank the staff of Bakersfield Heart Hospital for their excellent care and the compassionate staff of Hoffmann Hospice for holding our hands through our dear mother's final days.
