Velma Rae Jackson Obituary
Velma Rae Jackson October 9, 1926 - August 28, 2012 Born in Fullerton, California to parents Harold and Stella Burdick. She had two older sisters, Natalie and Lois. She remembered wonderful family trips to the beaches, riding the red cars, and experiencing the big 1933 Long Beach earthquake. The family later moved to Avenal, California, where she graduated from Avenal High School, and made several life long friends there. In 1945, she traveled with her parents to Colombia, where she met her future husband, John Jackson, who like her father was employed by Standard Oil. They were married in Las Vegas in 1948. Living 16 years in Venezuela and having three sons. In 1965 she returned to California, living first in Coalinga and finally moving to Bakersfield in 1971. In Bakersfield she joined the newcomers and a Monday afternoon bridge group, where she made several good friends. John, her husband passed away in 1988. In her Later years she enjoyed traveling to Laughlin, Hawaii, and going to car races around the country. Her favorite race drivers were Rick Mears, Helio Castronevas, and Jeff Gordon. In her later years she suffered painful and crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis with deformed hands and feet, failing eyesight, eventually unable to walk or to even hold things like a book in her hands. Yet she never complained. Through the years she maintained contact with good friends, June, Happy, Darlene, Jane and Wanda, and her nieces Carolyn, Leigh and Margaret, almost on a weekly basis. She is survived by her sons Gary, John, and Hal, and his wife Dana, granddaughter Casey, and great granddaughters Alexa and Kaylee, all of Bakersfield. The family would like to thank her Doctor, Jerry Seydel, and the wonderful women of A Caring Touch. Graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 4th, 10:00am at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd., Bakersfield, CA 93306. www.bakersfield.com/obits
