Vernita Ann Shell Obituary
Vernita Ann Shell March 3, 1927 - July 13, 2012 On July 13, 2012, our loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Vernita Shell, passed away peacefully at home. Vernita was born in Rich Fountain, Missouri in 1927 to Frank and Genevieve Schroeder, the 5th of 7 children. The family moved to Wasco, California in 1937, where her father farmed for a living. Vernita attended school in Wasco through high school where she was a cheerleader and met her future husband, Charles "Roger" Shell. Vernita and Roger started dating after high school and married on July 10, 1949. They moved to Bakersfield in 1956. They had four daughters Shelley, Debbie, Julie and Susie. Vernita worked for P G & E for 30 years, developing good and lasting friendships before retiring in 1988. Before and especially after retirement, Vernita enjoyed golfing with Roger and/or friends (often at Sundale Country Club); vacationing in Morro Bay; eating (and enjoying margaritas) frequently at Mexicali Southwest Restaurant; and spending time with family and friends. Vernita was a devout and faithful Catholic. In addition to her parents, Vernita was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Roger, and by 4 brothers and 1 sister. Vernita is the much loved mother of 4 daughters: Shelley Klein, husband Stan; Debbie Acker, husband Claud; Julie Butner, husband Al; and Susie Eckroth, husband Jim. She is the sister to Marilyn Hoffman. Vernita was a wonderful Grandmother to Jenny Smith, Aimee Jones and Carol Snee; Lori Kitchen, Tommy Lynch and Joe Acker; Sean and Devon McMahon; Andrew, Emma and Alec Eckroth; and 9 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of Vernita's bountiful life will be at a Mass of Christian Burial to be held on Friday, July 20, 2012 at 10 a.m. at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 7100 Stockdale Hwy., Bakersfield, California. A private internment will be held at a later date. Vernita's family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to Dr. Robert Laughlin and his exceptional staff for the loving care they provided her over the many years. A very special thank you also to Annette Pellens and her/our girls at the Westchester Home where Vernita lived until her passing. We have peace of mind that our precious "Diva Vernita"was lovingly taken care of and cherished by them as much as us. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Greenlawn Southwest Mortuary and Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Vernita's name to St. Vincent de Paul, 300 Baker St., Bakersfield, California, or the Assistance League, 1924 Q St., Bakersfield, California. www.bakersfield.com/obits
