Vernon D. Strong was born to the late Charlie and Emma Strong on September 15, 1928, in Texarkana, Texas. The third child of four children. He was reared in Texas and attended elementary school and graduated from Dunbar High School.

At the age of 20 years old, he moved from Texas and relocated to Bakersfield. In 1951 he was drafted into the United States Military, Army Branch, during the Korean Conflict (War), and in 1953 received an honorable discharge.

In 1952 he met and fell in love with the woman he would marry, and while in the service, he and Nancy were married in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1952. To this union, two children were born Valarie and David.

He worked for the Kern County Probation Department for nearly twenty years as a Kern County Probation Officer. He would eventually become a real estate broker, opening his own brokerage, and practiced real estate for almost sixty years. He was installed as president of the Kern County Employees Association in 1958 serving as a representative and leader for hundreds of Kern County employees. He served as a city council member from 1973 to 1985 representing the residents of Ward 1 for nearly 12 years before resigning his post and was chosen by two Kern County Supervisors to serve as a member of the Kern County Planning Commission.

Always a loving husband, father, and grandfather, he leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy; two adult children, Valarie Strong Mosley and David Strong (Debra), five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Services will be held Saturday, September 15th at 10 a.m. at The People's Missionary Baptist Church, 1451 Madison Ave. Graveside service to follow at Union Cemetery, 730 Potomac Ave. Contribution of flowers may be sent to Rucker's Mortuary, 301 Baker St, Bakersfield, CA 93305.
