Vernon Ruff, age 89, of Bakersfield, died December 10, 2014 at Rosewood Health Facility. He was born August 16, 1925 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Andrew and Eva Ruff. They moved to Taft, California in 1939, and after graduating from Taft Union High School, Vernon joined the USAF. He had completed his training as a B25 pilot when the war ended. Vernon returned to Taft and passed the tests for commercial pilot and flight instructor. He gave flight lessons to some of his brothers, and they all enjoyed flying.
He was employed as a draftsman by C.W.O.D. in Fellows, Mobil in Taft and Bakersfield, and Superior Farming Co. Vernon retired from Superior Farming when he was 60, then worked the next 24 1/2 years as a consultant for Sun World.
In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing in Santa Margarita Lake and swimming in the ocean at Avila. Vernon enjoyed taking care of his yard, and he was very adept at fixing things. He was an avid fan of the Lakers and Dodgers.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; their children, Cynthia, Nancy, Edward, and David; five granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
Vernon was next to the youngest in his family of seven brothers and three sisters, all of whom predeceased him.
Dr. Roger Spradlin of Valley Baptist Church officiated at a private service, and Vernon was entombed at Greenlawn Southwest December 15th.
