Vickie (Merriman) South Obituary
On October 11, 2014, Vickie (Merriman) South was called home to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was 91 years old. Vickie was born August 10, 1923, in Lawrenceburg, TN, to Roscoe and Lillian Bailey. She came to California in 1932 and resided in Bakersfield most of her life. After marrying in 1943, she raised three children. She was an excellent homemaker, sewing almost all her girls' clothes and preparing nutritious meals which included many of her own canned goods. Later in life, she was employed at Brock's Department Store and did volunteer work for Memorial Hospital, Greenacres Senior Center, and most recently at RiverLakes Church, where she was an active member of the Prime Time Sunday School class. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she generously shared and gave to others. She touched many lives with her outgoing nature and love of people. Many called her "Mom." She has family and many friends here and in New Braunfels, TX, where she spent several months each year during the last 20 years.
Vickie loved music and dancing and did so until she was no longer able; then she would chair dance. She loved to travel and traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Her travels included Europe, Hawaii, and even Saudi Arabia, traveling alone in 1993 to visit her older daughter.
Vickie is survived by her daughters, Carol Scott (Dick), and Linda Sheffield (Mark); son, Randy Merriman (Rose); she was grandma to five grandsons, Steve (Laurel), Andy (Stephanie), Liberty (Colleen), Brian (Crystal), and Jarrad (Kellie); and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 17, 11:00 a.m., in the Community Center at RiverLakes Church, 4301 Calloway Dr., with a reception to follow. For condolences please visit
