Wally Waits a lifetime resident of Delano, Ca.
Wallace "Wally" Waits was born on the homestead in Delano, California on September 14, 1923 where he grew up on his family's farm on the West side of Delano. Wally was born in the same place as his father who was one of the original settlers of Delano. He helped take care of the family apricot orchard and attended Delano High School where he lettered in all major sports. After graduation, he served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater marching across France and Germany and was decorated with the Bronze Star.
After the war, Wally was discharged in Indiana and traveled to Chicago to see an army buddy, it was there that he met his future bride Sarah Pagano. He went home to Delano but later returned to Chicago to marry the love of his life and bring her home to California. They lived with his parents until he could build a home of their own on Jefferson Street. He built a second home on the same lot where he and Sarah raised their four children and where he lived until his death.
Wally continued to play city league basketball and also coached basketball and baseball for St. Mary's school for many years. He was involved with Delano Little League and the Knights of Columbus. Wally did much volunteer work for the improvements to St. Mary's Church and was honored by Pope John Paul II with the Benemerenti medal for his service to the church in 2002.
Wally was a master carpenter and built many homes in the Delano area. He worked for Self-Help for many years and people still remember and thank him for making it possible for them to have their own homes.
Wally was preceded in death by his wife of over sixty years Sarah, his youngest son Richard Waits and grandson Wally Waits.
He is survived by his sister Clara Freer of Australia, son Danny and Jeane Waits, son Mark and Anita Waits, and daughter Judy and Dwight Todd all of Delano. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, thirteen great grand -children and one great-great-grand child.
Services will be on Friday, March 20, 2015 at St. Mary's Church located at 916 Lexington Street in Delano at 10 o'clock.
