Warren Wooley Obituary

Warren Clinton Wooley 1932 - 2011 God called Warren home on July 18, 2011 after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 11, 1932 in Bakersfield, California. Warren started working early, and as a young teen he caddied for John Brock, Sr. at Bakersfield Country Club, and then went on to work for Brock's Department store in Bakersfield as a delivery boy. In high school, Warren worked for J.C. Wattenbarger in the lumber yard, and graduated from Bakersfield High in 1950. In 1951 he joined the naval reserves as a Sea Bee, and in 1952 he married Mary Elizabeth McLaughlin. Warren continued to work for Wattenbarger as a carpenter and start his family. In 1953 the navy put Warren on active duty as a Sea Bee, and he shipped out to Kwajalein Atoll and then Guam. After his active duty in the Korean War, he stayed in the naval reserves and continued to serve honorably, retiring from the Sea Bees after 26 years as Chief Builder. Warren worked as a journeyman union carpenter until 1973 when he started working for the State of California as Carpentry Supervisor at California Correctional Institute in Tehachapi. In 1978 Warren went to work as Supervisor of Building Trades at Porterville State Hospital. He retired from the State of California after 23 years, and was a member of the Carpenters' Union for more than 40 years. Warren was a member of the American Kennel Club. He was an avid golfer, playing every day until his health prevented it. He loved to tell stories and will be greatly missed. Warren is survived by his wife Mary of 58 years; his son and daughter-in-law Mark and Leslie Wooley; his daughters and sons-in-law Dava and Dennis Parrott, Rosanne and Jerry Ellis, and Shawna and Dewayne Burns; his nine grandchildren Brandon, Ryan, Christopher, Elyce, Aimee, Matthew, Jonathan, Michael, and Bryndle; and his four great-grandchildren Lily, Renee, Olivia, and Devin. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 3000 Gibson Street, Bakersfield, CA 93308. The family would like to thank everyone for their prayers and support through this difficult time. Graveside services will be held Monday, July 25 at 10:45 at Bakersfield National Cemetery at 30338 East Bear Mountain Boulevard in Arvin, CA. www.bakersfield.com/obits

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your dad. I remember him as funny and friendly whenever we hung out at your house on Occidental. I know what your family is going through, as my own dad, another former Occidental St. homeowner, passed away last year and is buried at the same cemetery your dad is at. It's a beautiful resting place by the mountains. Our prayers are for Shawna, Roseanne, Dava, Mark and their families, and of course, Mary.

To the entire family I wish to express my deepest sympathy. Warren is a vivid memory of my childhood as is all of your family. I remember him with fondness as an easygoing guy around the neighborhood. Squeals and laughter of children never challenged him - and there were a lot of us on Occidental.

My prayers and sympathy,
Tonu & Maureen Mercer Wali
