William John Obituary
William John "Bill" MacMillan Our beloved father, William "Bill" MacMillan, 71, died unexpectedly Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013. He had owned and operated Rosa's Ristorante Italiano in Pismo Beach for 25 years. Bill was born and raised in Massachusetts and attended Medford Massachusetts Schools. In 1961, he joined the U.S. Army, where he spent most of his time in Europe and was involved in the intelligence area of the army. In 1966, Bill met and married Ada "Rosa." Together they left Boston and headed to California in search of the American dream. They settled in Visalia, Calif., to open their first Italian restaurant. Later, in 1972, they opened Rosa's in Bakersfield, Calif. Their success inspired relatives to open restaurants all over the Central Valley. Bill's good business sense and Rosa's pioneering spirit eventually led them to the Central Coast. In 1988, they opened Rosa's Ristorante Italiano in Pismo Beach. Bill and Rosa worked together in the restaurant business for over 40 years. When Rosa passed away in 2006, Bill was determined to carry on the legacy they had created together. Bill was a visionary, always thinking of ways to make the restaurant better. In 2008, he accomplished his dream of remodeling the restaurant by adding a new bar, dining room and fireplace. He worked hard and enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved being at the restaurant and many of his customers became good friends. He enjoyed sitting at their table, sharing a glass of wine, telling jokes, giving business advice and reminiscing about Rosa. He ran the restaurant with integrity and treated the employees like family. Affectionately known as "Papa," Bill enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He often attended soccer games, dance recitals and school events. They will miss his loving hugs and great sense of humor. We are so fortunate to have had an amazing father. We will always cherish the times we had together as a family. No doubt, Dad is smiling down with heaven with mom in his arms ... Bill is survived by his daughter, Helen Kunkel (Dr. James Kunkel) of Arroyo Grande; son, Douglas MacMillan (Shannon) of Pismo Beach; grandchildren Analise and Cannon Kunkel and Brianna and Nicholas MacMillan; siblings Douglas MacMillan of Mission Viejo, Calif; and Ken MacMillan of Los Osos, Calif. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ada "Rosa;" sister, Marlene Giglio; and grandson, Anthony Douglas MacMillan. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 800 Bello in Pismo Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a . www.bakersfield.com/obits
