William John Drennan

1944 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
William John Drennan April 4, 1944 - December 1, 2012 William John Drennan, born April 4, 1944, in Berkeley, California, second son of William Alvin Drennan and Evelyn Virginia (Drennan) Pletcher, brother of George, Jim, Dave, Bill, Mike, and Mark Drennan, died unexpectedly on December 1, 2012, of natural causes. John was pre-deceased by his parents and his brother Mark. He never married and had no children. John grew up in Oildale, California, attending Beardsley Elementary and Junior High School. He graduated from North High School in 1962, where he excelled in football, basketball and baseball. He was named Best-All-Around by his graduating class for his athleticism, intelligence, and all-around great personality. John then attended Bakersfield Junior College before transferring to a series of California JCs over the next dozen years before deciding that a pre-medical degree was not to be. He received a needed kidney transplant from his brother Dave in 1976 and had excellent kidney health for the remainder of his life. During the 1960s and '70s, John expanded his knowledge and skills in construction work, including early work at his father's Drennan Construction sites. In 1978 he moved to Tigard, Oregon to pursue construction and land development projects. He was very close to and worked with long-time family friend and mentor, Ed Walden, for many years. He worked as a building inspector before forming Straight and Sturdy Fencing, building quality fences around the Tigard area for the next 30 years. He also helped maintain and develop several local properties there. John's rebounds from many health concerns over 40 years showed his strength and his desire for life. John's friendships were many and varied, starting in his early school years and adding new friends throughout his lifetime. His athleticism, his quick and often quirky humor, his love of good food and fun times, and his dedication to his long-time friendships - all endeared him to those whose lives he touched. John will be interred next to the graves of his parents and his brother Mark at Greenlawn Cemetery in Bakersfield (3700 River Blvd.). A memorial for family members and close friends will be held on Saturday, 12/22, at 11:00 a.m. at the gravesite. www.bakersfield.com/obits
