William LeRoy Mooney was born on December 30, 1932 in Trenton, Missouri. He passed away on February 4, 2016 in Bakersfield, California at the age of 83. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War. He put down roots in Lamont, California where he raised his family and lived for the rest of his life. For decades he worked as a mechanic, earning a reputation as the Man Who Could Fix Anything. He was a tireless worker, a talented craftsman, an avid reader, a comedian, a storyteller, a kite flier, a puzzle solver, a card shark, a voracious eater, and a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Lawson Mooney, his mother, Devah Mooney, and his sister, Betty Valentich. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Emma Jane "Jean" Mooney, whom he loved dearly; his daughters Rebecca Mooney (husband Michael) and Jaye McWhorter (husband Charles); his granddaughters Heidi Mekkelson (husband Erik), Kate Carlson (husband Lee), and Alexandra Mooney; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
William had a brilliant mind, a loving heart, and a quality of character that was unsurpassed. He will be forever remembered and deeply missed. We love you so much, Papa.
Memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3700 River Boulevard, Bakersfield.
