Willie Etta Oglesby Snydal Obituary
Willie Etta Oglesby Snydal October 4, 1932 - April 14, 2013 Willie Etta Snydal passed away peacefully on April 14th, 2013 in Bakersfield, California. She was born on October 4th, 1932, in Chatham, Mississippi, to John Henry and Mavis Oglesby. She was the fourth of six siblings born on a farm in the Mississippi countryside. Willie grew up in Mississippi until the age of 11, when her family made the cross-country trip to California. They settled in Old River, where her mother was a cook in the cafeteria at Buena Vista School and her father was a custodian and worked on the grounds. The family lived at Buena Vista School and the younger kids attended school there. Willie graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1950 and matriculated to Bakersfield College, then on to San Jose State College where she earned a BA degree and her teaching credential. While dancing with friends at Amestoy's Tavern, Willie met the love of her life, Dick Snydal. He asked her for a dance, and she responded, "Only if you dance with my friend first!" The two were inseparable from that point forward. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on June 14th, 1958. Willie and Dick had two daughters. They were happily married for 52 years, before Dick's passing in 2011. Willie was a wonderful and well-loved kindergarten and first grade teacher at Eissler School in Bakersfield for 30 years. After retirement, she had many happy years with Dick, travelling, visiting with family and friends, and enjoying daily Happy Hour at 5:00 with whoever stopped by. The light of her life was her six grandchildren, and they spent many wonderful hours at Grandma and Grandpa's house. Willie is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Patty and Jerry Jones, and Carol and Carlos Chavez. Grandchildren: Katie, Conner, and Nathan Jones; Heather, Emily and Meghan Chavez. Sisters: Eva Pendley and Kathy Evans, and her brother Charles Oglesby. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, and her brothers John Oglesby and Robert Oglesby. A celebration of Willie's life will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 9101 Kern Canyon Road, on Saturday, April 20th, at 10:00 am. The family would like to thank Gayle and Bill Johnson and the devoted staff at Pacifica Senior Living for their loving care of Mom during the last months of her life. www.bakersfield.com/obits
