Wilma Allyne Byrd

1928 - 2012 Obituary Condolences
Wilma Allyne Byrd Obituary
Wilma Allyne Byrd October 20, 1928 - November 18, 2012 Wilma Allyne Byrd was born October 20, 1928. She passed away November 18, 2012, in her home with her family and friends at her side. She was born in Dallas, Texas, to Raymond and Sybil Dunaway. She was the 2nd in a family of 7 children and grew up in Webb City, Missouri. Wilma took enough college preparatory classes to graduate from Webb City High School in only three years. After graduating from high school, Wilma worked for the telephone company from May 1946 until April 1953. During these years, she met, married, and divorced Eugene Lafayette Cook. There were three children from this union, Larry, Danny, and Robin. In 1953 Wilma moved with her children to Bakersfield, CA, where her parents had moved the previous year. In Bakersfield, Wilma worked at Bank of America for 2 years and then at Pacific Gas and Electric Co. for 32 years. She went to college in the evening and received her Associate degree from Bakersfield Jr. College. She retired from PG&E in March of 1987. But 5 years prior to her retirement, she traveled back to Webb City to attend her 35th class reunion. There she rekindled her relationship with Frank Byrd, who had lost his wife the previous year. Frank was the love of her life. They dated and then married August 6, 1982. Since retiring, Wilma's time has been filled with various needle art projects. It was her great pleasure to have won over 20 blue ribbons at the Kern County Fair. She adored the arts and attended the Shakespearian Festival in Oregon for years. She was active with her husband, Frank, in many bowling leagues, winning many trophies. Wilma's ultimate accomplishment is that she was a friend to everyone she met. She lived her life passionately in everything she did. She will be missed by so many family members and friends. We all have peace knowing she is no longer imprisoned in a body that took so much of her away and that she is reunited with her husband, Frank; her son, Larry; her stepdaughter, Nancy; her best friends; and her loving parents. She is survived by her son, Danny Cook and wife, Cori of Bakersfield; her daughter, Robin Elliott and husband, Mel of Indio, CA; her stepson, Tony Byrd and wife, Mona of Temecula, CA; her stepson, Terri Byrd and his wife, Aida of Joplin, MO; her stepson, Rick Byrd of Webb City, MO; her sister, Yvonne Emery of Highland, CA; her brother, James Dunaway and wife, Angela of Evans, GA; her brother, Mark Dunaway and wife, Marcia of Atlanta, GA; her brother, Stephen Dunaway and wife, Penny of Orem, UT; and many grandchildren and great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Byrd; her son, Larry Eugene Cook; her stepdaughter, Nancy Gates; her brother, Glenn Dunaway; and her sister, Lucille Gearhardt. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at Greenlawn Southwest Celebration of Life Center, 2739 Panama Lane.
