I was so very saddened to hear of Vancie's passing. Roy and Vancie were very close to me and helped me so much at a difficult time in my life, I lived with them for a time and Roy was kind enough to loan me his car so I could get to interviews to get employed.
Though I am from Boston, when Vancie had all those great country western singers over for those sing-a-long nights, they made me fit right in even singing along with them. I am so glad I have recordings of her songs and she told me the story behind many of them. I know that Vancie and Roy were very much in love. When I was with them and Vancie wasn't nearby, Roy would tell me of his love for her and he always got teary-eyed, Vancie did the same when speaking of Roy. I know that he brought her coffee every morning.
I wrote a poem for Vancie which she really enjoyed and would like to include it here for it speaks a little of her life that she shared with me.
THERE'S A KIND OF BEAUTY
(for Vancie)
There's a certain kind of woman
You just like to be around
She knows just how to lift you up
When you're blue and feelin' down.
As natural as the cool, sweet earth
That lies beneath her feet,
Her red hair glowin' in the sun
Like fields of sunkissed wheat.
She's bent her back to cotton fields
Been poor but satisfied,
The hot wind blowin' cross her face
Blue skies locked in her eyes.
Her heart's as big as a redwood
Her voice as sweet as love
She's a country western woman
Country music's in her blood.
She met the devil face to face
He told her "You're gonna' die!'
But this country woman stood her ground
Proved false the devil's lie.
She'll tell you she's as old as dirt
And seen a heap of life
And the pretty gal she used to be
Has faded to the night.
But there's a kind of beauty
That time just can't erase
The beauty that's in Vancie's heart
And soft upon her face.
I know that Jehovah will remember both her and Roy and I hope to see them in that earthly paradise so near .
Sincerely,
Hannah Ruth Joseph

What an accomplished woman: a beautiful tall red head, country singer, oil painter, and so much more. I don't know her whole story, but one day sitting at her kitchen table I saw her standing at the sink pealing an apple in one long piece and she said with a warm tone in her voice, "it is for my husband and everyday since I married him I peal his apple to keep him healthy," (and that was after 46 years). Like a apple tree gives sweat fruit freely to those who pass by, so did Aunt Vancie nurish and care for each person that came along her way. She was present and kind, talented and smart, rich and giving. May her memory encourage, inspire, and never fade from the hearts of those who love her. Her is the link to her hit song

I remember the first time I met Vancie & Roy back in 1972. Steve & I drove down to Bakersfield and stayed a few days with them. I remember how they made me feel welcome and part of the family. That love grew over the years. Vancie will be missed so much but we look forward to the future when we will see her & Roy again in the resurrection. (John 5:28,29) We send all our love to Peggy, Ben & all the family. Jo Ann & Steve Baker

Although I didn't know dear Sister Flowers, we share the same faith, so I look forward to hearing her beautiful singing voice in Paradise also. Until then, family, trust in Jehovah, the God of Comfort (Is. 61:2)!

I will always remember Vancie AND Roy. I drove them to the convention about 3 years ago and I will always remember the CD that Roy gave me of Vancie singing and the pride and great love he had for her. They are both greatly missed, but it will only be for a short time. We shall all be together again soon and will be able to appreciate Vancies beautiful singing voice once more. My sincerest condolances at this time and pray Jehovah's Holy Spirit help carry you day to day.

I can remember when I was a little girl and Aunt Vancie made me a Little House on the Prairie type dress. I felt so special getting to spend that time at her house and getting to go on a Bible study with her. She truly loved Jehovah. Aunt Vancie was very encouraging and loving. She sang so beautifully. I loved listening to her records when she wasn't there to sing in person. It will be wonderful seeing her in the Paradise!
