Rueben Lee Grundy Obituary
Rueben Lee Grundy February 3, 1936 - July 2, 2011 Rueben Lee Grundy was born in Boley, Oklahoma on February 3, 1936 to Joseph and Mozell Grundy. The Grundy's were a God fearing family and influential in their community. Rueben was the sixth of seven children. In 1949, the family relocated to Bakersfield, CA. Rueben and his family were gifted with beautiful voices. He loved to sing. Soon after the family united with Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Reuben and three of his siblings were called on to provide an A and B selection every Sunday morning during the worship service. While a student at Bakersfield High School, he became a member of the Melonaries, a popular vocal group. After graduation, they changed their name to "The Colts" and were signed to Vida Records Company in Pasadena, CA. Buck Ram, their producer/ song writer wrote two of the group's biggest hits, "Adorable" (where Rueben was the lead singer) and "Lips Red As Wine." The success of "Adorable" gained the group an appearance at the New York Apollo Theatre and tours throughout the states. After the group dispersed, Rueben embarked upon several careers eventually finding his niche with Pacific Bell Telephone Company. He was a very successful sales representative and earned a high degree of respect in the industry. He retired in 1999. Rueben passed away quietly, in the early morning hours on Saturday, July 2, 2011. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mozell Grundy; wife, Alberta Pugh Grundy; three brothers, Rudolph, Melvin and Joseph Jr.; and sister, Lillie Myrtle.
