He was the oldest of three and raised in McFarland, CA where he attended McFarland High School, and was active in FFA and Drama Club. After graduating in 1964, he attended Bakersfield College where he appeared in several plays before beginning a career in broadcasting. In 1968, while working under the air name of GK Woody at KUZZ Radio, he caught the eye of the Advertising Traffic Girl, Sandra Leigh Kilgore. Gary had many hobbies and his love for photography led him to a part-time career in wedding photography. After almost a decade of working in broadcasting, he formed an advertising company, the Woodruff Agency in conjunction with his long-time friend and colleague of over 40 years, Joe Scott of the Scott Agency and wife, Kathy. Together they were involved in the publication of the Farm News published by the Kern County Farm Bureau. In 1990, he starred in a noncommissioned pilot episode for the television series, "Lost legends of the Old West", produced by American West Productions. Gary loved fishing, camping, tinkering at his workbench, shooting, and for some time, being a part of The Good The Bad and The Ugly, a western reenactment group.
