Harold Dean Cooley June 11, 1937 - April 21, 2012 Dean Cooley was born June 11, 1937 in Tooele, Utah to Howard and May Liddell Eckman. He grew up in Inglewood, California, and moved to Bakersfield after retiring. He spent four years in the U.S. Navy before returning home to continue his life of service. He joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in December 1958 and retired as a lieutenant after 31 years with the department in March of 1989. After retiring from the Sheriff's department, he spent 17 years working part-time as a park ranger for North Bakersfield Parks and Recreation. Dean is survived by his wife of nearly 42 years, Kay Marshall Cooley; his 5 children: Steve (Janet) Cooley of Holden, MA, Roger (Therese) Cooley of Crownsville, MD, Laura Cooley, Joe (Anna) Cooley, and Rebecca (Matt) Clayton; his 13 grandchildren: Steve Jr., Kristin, Megan, Jacob Dean, Daniel, Rachel, Benjamin, Ruthie, Michael, Matt, Isaac, Jacob Timothy, and Mason; his two great-granddaughters, with a third little girl on the way; and his siblings: Craig (Barbara) Cooley of Manhattan Beach, CA, John Cooley of Stanton, CA, Caralee (Vern) Reed of Sandy, UT, and Mike (Lisa) Cooley of Logan, UT. He was preceded in death by his father, Howard Eckman, his mother, May Liddell Eckman Cooley, and his brother, Howard "Bub" Eckman Jr.. Dean was a caring and deeply loved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband, brother and friend. He touched many lives in his tenure on this Earth, and will never be forgotten. A graveside memorial service with full military honors is scheduled for Monday, April 30, 2012 at 1315 hours at the Bakersfield National Cemetery. www.bakersfield.com/obits
