Rev. Don William Shelton Obituary
Rev. Don William Shelton October 22, 1943 - September 26, 2012 Rev. Don William Shelton passed from this life on September 26, 2012 after battling cancer. He was born in Bakersfield, CA on October 22, 1943 to L. Bradley and Ruth Cary Shelton. He graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1961, attended Bakersfield College, then transferred to Northwest Christian University, graduating in 1967. At NCU, he met his wife, Linda, to whom he was married 47 years. After attending seminary at American Baptist Seminary of the West in Berkeley, California, he was ordained at First Christian Church, Bakersfield (now Mill Creek Christian Church). He served churches in Antioch, California, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Bakersfield, before being called to Regional Ministry with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Pacific Southwest Region, where he served over 140 churches for 12 years. Following that, he was called to the church headquarters in Indianapolis as the Interim President of Disciples Home Missions. Upon returning to California, and trying to retire, he served as Interim Minister at Pasadena Christian Church, then returned to Bakersfield as Interim Pastor at Mill Creek Christian Church in September, 2011. Don is survived by his wife, Linda, of Bakersfield, California; their two daughters, Shonna Shearson (John) of Bakersfield, and Stacy Shelton (Jay Reid) of Ione, OR; three grandchildren, Lucas and Logan Shearson and Lily Reid; his brother, Dick Shelton (Jaytee); his nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless people whose lives were impacted by him. There were many highlights of Don's life in addition to his devotion to Christ, the church, and his family. He traveled far and wide around the world for vacations, educational purposes and mission trips. He received an Honorary Doctoral degree from Northwest Christian University, served on many boards for the church and educational organizations, and received the honored minister's pin for his work in the church. He was proud to be a member of the Tournament of Roses Committee in Pasadena, California. Don was a member and Past President of Kern Kiwanis. He was also a founder of Ecumenical Social Ministries in Colorado Springs, and Habitat for Humanity Golden Empire in Bakersfield. He loved teaching, laughing and playing games with his daughters and grandchildren, nieces and nephews and the children from his churches. One of his greatest joys in life was to counsel and direct church camps at Loch Leven Conference Center, which, for him was one of the holiest places on earth. It's hard to know if he loved fishing or golfing more. He got his first hole in one during a golf game in the summer of 2012. Don ran the Pikes Peak Marathon in 1978. He enjoyed storytelling, singing, ventriloquism, china painting, and playing basketball. A Celebration Service for the Life of Don Shelton will be held on October 18, 2012 at 3:00pm at Mill Creek Christian Church, 1660 'S' Street, Bakersfield, CA. Memorial gifts may be made to the Shelton Family Scholarship Fund at Disciples Seminary Foundation in Claremont, or Mill Creek Christian Church, Bakersfield. www.bakersfield.com/obits
