Betty D. Zaninovich 1920 - 2013 Betty D. Zaninovich went to be with the Lord on January 13, 2013. She was born Elizabeth Doty on August 8, 1920 to Foster and Helen Doty in McFarland, CA. In 1923, the family moved to Delano. She had three siblings: sister, Marion and brothers, Robert and Jack. She attended local schools and graduated from Delano High School in 1938. She attended Bakersfield College, then transferred to Fresno State College where she earned her B.A. degree and a teaching credential. Betty then returned to Delano and began teaching at Fremont School, a profession she truly loved. She met Andrew Zaninovich in 1942 and after a long courtship, they were married on January 17, 1948. They were married for over 54 years until Andrew's death on May 29, 2002. Andrew was a successful farmer, a co-owner of A&N Zaninovich with his brother, Nick Zaninovich. Andrew and Betty enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their home. Betty's delicious home-cooked meals were always a highlight. Betty was a very devout Catholic who truly loved the Lord and did all that she could to help others. She was very proud to be the first baby to be baptized at Saint Mary's Church in Delano in 1921. She also served for many years at Saint Mary's as a lector and Eucharistic minister. For her years of service to the Church, Betty was very proud to receive an award from Pope John Paul II called the Benemerenti Award. The medal and certificate are proudly displayed in her home. Betty was a very compassionate, caring person who touched the lives of many people. She will be missed by her family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Marion Fontana; brother, Robert Doty and husband Andrew. She is survived by her son, Anthony; brother, Jack Doty and wife Lillian; sister-in-law, Anna Zaninovich; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family thanks the staff of Delano District Skilled Nursing Facility and Dr. Anna Mendoza for the fine care that Betty received during the last 8 1/2 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Disease Association of Kern County, 5500 Olive Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308. Services will be held on Friday, January 18th: Viewing 9:15 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.; Rosary and Funeral Mass 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. (all at St. Mary's Church in Delano). Burial will follow at Reedley Cemetery, 2185 S. Reed Ave., Reedley, CA. Reception to follow at Delano Elks Lodge. www.bakersfield.com/obits
