Marie Nichols Goldberg May 15, 1918 - January 24, 2013 Mrs. Marie Nichols Goldberg was born May 15, 1918, and passed away Jan. 24, 2013. A Bakersfield native, she will be greatly missed. Her father and his brothers developed much of north Bakersfield and upper La Cresta, and Colonel Howard Nichols Elementary School was named after her uncle. The daughter of Raymond Harmon Nichols and Isabelle Nunes Nichols, Marie was a graduate of Kern County Union High School and University of California, Berkeley, summa cum laude. She finished her graduate work in zoology at University of the Pacific in Stockton, and took a faculty appointment there for several years before moving back to Bakersfield in 1966 to live with her high school sweetheart and new husband, David F. Goldberg, with whom she reunited at their high-school reunion in 1965. She taught at Cal State Bakersfield in the 1970's. She was a mother, a gracious hostess and a talented cook and homemaker. She was passionate about appreciating and protecting animals. She was preceded in death by her son, James Alden Noble, by daughter Nancy, and by her husband, David. Marie is survived by her children Nikki (and Dr. Samuel) Benson of San Francisco, Paula Dunlap (and Robert Logan) of Santa Barbara, Roger (and Janie) Goldberg of Bakersfield, Deidre Goldberg (and Mitchell Frangadakis) of Ashland, OR, by her grandchildren Michelle Hofacre, Mary Ellen Field, Richard Harmon, Tiffani Herbst and Christopher Goldberg, and by her great-grandchildren.
