Lester V. Anthony February 14, 1937- February 24, 2013 Lester Verzell Anthony was born, February 14, 1937 in St Maurice, Louisiana, to Ica Ola and Lee Anthony, the sixth of fourteen children. The family relocated to San Francisco, CA in 1943 and then to Bakersfield, CA, where he graduated from Bakersfield High School in 1956. Following graduation, Lester enlisted in the Navy and completed tours of duty in Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan. Honorably discharged from the Navy, he moved to San Diego, CA where he met his wife, Joyce Maye Clay, and married her in 1962. To this union a beautiful baby girl, Pamela Yvette Anthony, was born. Lester returned to school and earned his AA degree at Los Angeles City College. He then transferred to CSULA where he received his Bachelor of Science in Political Science, and later his Masters of Science in Public Administration. In 1973 he became employed with the Los Angeles County Probation Department where he served until retirement in 2003. Lester rededicated his life to Christ and later accepted his calling to the ministry and was ordained in March 1984. He became a Chaplain in Prison Ministry, and provided services to inmates in Downtown Los Angeles, Lynwood, CA, and at the LA Sheriff's Twin Towers. Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend Lee Anthony and Ica Ola Anthony; his sisters, Ella Washington, Jessie Jackson, and Pamela Mc Grue; and brother, Jethro Anthony. He is survived by his wife, Joyce M. Anthony; daughter, Pamela Anthony-Hardy and, son- in- law, Derrick Hardy; as well as siblings, Ardra Anthony (Jean), Sylvia Brown (Hugh), Lee Anthony, Gloria Bias (Chet), Ralph Anthony, Gilbert Anthony, Bernard Anthony (Marion), Oscar Anthony (Linda), and Frederick Anthony; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Memorial Services will be held, Friday, 11:00 a. m., at Messiah Baptist Church, 4500 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. www.bakersfield.com/obits
