Frederick Bernard (Greenberg) Phillips March 10, 1937 - November 9, 2013 Frederick Bernard (Greenberg) Phillips was born on March 10, 1937 in San Francisco, California. He died on Saturday November 9, 2013 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. Fred grew-up in Georgetown and Placerville, CA. He joined the US Air Force in January 1955 and served until October 7, 1960, achieving the rank of Sergeant. He went on to serve in the California Air National Guard for many years. He has resided in Bakersfield, Kern County, CA for the past 25 years. He retired from the Department of Corrections after 23 years of service. He went on to gain a Master in Public Administration and taught at the local community colleges. He dedicated countless hours and years to serving the Disabled American Veterans, the Lions Club, and numerous programs to help those who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction. He helped to coordinate various programs to assist inmate rehabilitation so that they could become productive citizens. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard Greenberg and Helen Pauline Reich, and his great grandson Carter Tyler Barnett. He is survived by his wife Wilma Y. Phillips of Bakersfield, CA, his sister Marsha Hagy of Georgetown, CA and his brother Michael Hill of Scotts Valley, CA. He is the father of five children, Helen Phillips Goodrich of Salida, CA, Raymond Phillips of Modesto, CA, Terresa Phillips Figueira of French Camp, CA, Karen Phillips Gustafson of Salida, CA, and Bryon Phillips of Los Gatos, CA. He is the step-father of three children, Jewel Sean Gentry of Monterey, CA, Samuel Keith Gentry of Lake Forest, CA, Didra Gentry of Bakersfield, CA. He is the grandfather to eighteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A Mass will be held on Friday November 15th at St. Philip Parish, 7100 Stockdale Hwy Bakersfield, CA at 9:30 a.m. There will be a viewing held on Thursday evening November 14th from6:00-7:00 p.m followed by a Rosary (also held at the Parish). Fred will be interred at Bakersfield National Cemetery 30338 East Bear Mountain Blvd, Arvin CA. immediately following the Mass at St Philip. www.bakersfield.com/obits
