Furlong, Walter Joseph - Parkville  
On June 22, 2016, Walter Joseph Furlong-Age 92; beloved husband of Joan Furlong (nee Petrlik), and the late Dorothy Furlong (nee Herrlich) the mother of his six children. Devoted father of Barbara Furlong, Stephen (Leslie) Furlong, Susan Looper, Cynthia (John) Smith, Joan (Phil) Fridley, Neale (Maureen) Furlong. Dear brother of Marie Wall and Anne (Bud) Burke. Walter has twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Walter was proud of his service as a Master Sergeant in the 8th Air Force during WWII. He was a turret gunner on B-17's and B-24's. He flew on forty missions in the European Theater out of England and Lecce Italy. He was shot down on four occasions, surviving all. On his last mission, he was shot down over enemy territory and was captured and spent the last months of the war as a POW. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 oak leaf clusters, the Air Medal with three clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, two Purple Hearts, and the POW Medal. Walter worked for BG&E as a crew foreman and retired in 1986 after 42 years of service. He was actively involved at the Parkville American Legion Post 183 for many years. He was also a big Ravens fan. Family and friends will honor Walter's life at Evans Funeral Chapel 8800 Harford Rd 21234 in Parkville on July 8th at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fisher House Foundation @ www.fisherhouse.org .
