Scammon, Jeanne - Baltimore
Jeanne Anne Stocker Scammon, 87, passed away on March 27, 2015, at the New Smyrna Beach, FL, home of her daughter and son-in-law. She was at peace and surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Jeanne was born on January 7, 1928, in Queens, New York, to William M. Stocker, Sr., and Crystal Bell Page Stocker. She attended P.S. 136 and Andrew Jackson High School before attending Barnard College and Adelphi University, from which she graduated as a pre-med student in 1948. At Adelphi, she met Burleigh E. (Lee) Scammon and they were married on January 15, 1948. Lee, who was a World War II Navy veteran, enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and the couple embarked on an adventure that took them around the nation, as well as to Japan and Germany. Jeanne always looked at each new post as an opportunity to share world cultures with her four children and they all had great fun during their travels. Jeanne taught college classes to airmen at the base education centers of several of their assignments. When Lee retired from the Air Force in 1965, the family settled in Beltsville, MD, moving to Laurel, MD, in 1969. Jeanne joined the school system as a science and health educator and remained with the system for more than two decades. Throughout her 47 years in the community, Jeanne worked tirelessly on behalf of the people who lived there. For decades, she held leadership positions in the Mental Health Association of Prince George's County. She was appointed to the school health council, the Women's Commission, and several other boards and commissions, and was active for many years is organizing school and county-wide science fairs. In 1977, Jeanne earned her Master's Degree in Education and Counseling at the University of Maryland, College Park, and she later completed all of the coursework necessary to advance to doctoral status. She was also a certified biofeedback therapist and very active in the Mid-Atlantic Society for Biofeedback and Behavioral Medicine. The Society presented her with their Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. She was honored countless times for her service to the community by Governors, the Maryland General Assembly, and county government officials. Jeanne was predeceased by her parents and her brother, William M. Stocker, Jr. and by her former husband. She is survived by her daughters Jeannette Duerr (Bart), of New Smyrna Beach, FL, and Pamela Polk, of Summerville, SC, her sons Burleigh W. "Chip" Scammon (Bridget) of Greenville, SC, and Andrew (Shelly) Scammon, of Long Beach, CA. Jeanne is also survived by her grandchildren, Tamara Reese, CW4 Matthew Ferguson (Paula), Audra Ferguson Brazier (Chuck), Rebecca Polk Wright, MD (Calvin), Bradley Scammon, and Madeline Scammon. She also wholeheartedly embraced Bart's children as her grandchildren: Kathleen Saunders (Ken), Darlene Engles (Mike), Marlene Fedderson (Dana), and Jonathan Duerr. Jeanne is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Eric, Jr., Spencer and Zachary Reese, Allison and Abigail Ferguson, Wyatt and Jacob Hall, Olivia and Noah Brazier, Kendall Saunders, Kayla Saunders, Carrie Engles (Corey) Spencer, Jess (Felicia) and Devan Engles, Chase and Bryn Fedderson. She found great joy in the midst of this family and was noted for her imaginative holiday gifts to each one. She also dearly loved her nieces and nephews and treasured her time with them. She reveled in entertaining friends and family at every opportunity. Jeanne moved to independent living at Bishop's Glen Retirement Community in Holly Hill, FL, in 2012 and spent three very happy years there before her health began to fail. A memorial celebration of her life will take place on Saturday, June 6, at 11 am at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, on Main Street, in Laurel, with light refreshments to follow. A health educator to the very end, Jeanne donated her earthly remains to the University of Central Florida Medical School. For over a decade, Jeanne facilitated a group at Laurel Regional Hospital for persons living with bipolar disorder. When told of her passing, one of the members said, "People hope that they leave a hole in the universe when they die. Your mother leaves a crater." Indeed, she does.
