Dorothy Lloyd Helfrich Jelks Hicks, age 88, former longtime resident of Baltimore, MD passed away in the early morning of April 18, 2013 of complications from emergency surgery in Ventura, CA. She was born in Shanghai, China on March 19, 1925, to Dorothy Crawford Lloyd, a graduate of Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and Laurence Trevor Helfrich, a professor at Shanghai University. She returned to Baltimore at age 8 and graduated from Towson High School, Goucher College and University of Iowa where she completed her MS. She returned to Baltimore to marry her childhood sweetheart, Joseph Preston Jelks (Joe), in 1951 at Lovely Lane Methodist Church. Dottie and Joe lived in Baltimore and then Connecticut, returning to vacation in Ocean City. After Joe's untimely death in 1973, she remarried in 1978 and moved to California. She valued community work, and was a longtime supporter of the Lovely Lane Methodist Church, the Seamen's Church Institute of NY, her local libraries and symphonies, and school music programs. She was a lifelong volunteer wherever she lived, and was active in the PEO Sisterhood, lately Chapter FZ Ventura. Dottie was an avid reader with a deep love of the ocean, sailing, fishing and fossil and rock hunting, especially along Calvert Cliffs. She shared these loves with her family and actively enjoyed them to the end with the help of her sons. She was preceded in death by her son Guy Helfrich Jelks, her first husband of 21 years Joseph Preston Jelks, and her second husband of 24 years Harry J. Hicks, Jr. She is survived by her 2 sons, Joseph P. Jelks, Jr. of Lewes DE and John L. Jelks of Chesapeake Beach MD, her daughter Lauren Jelks Doyel of Ventura CA, 4 granddaughters, 1 great-grandson, and Lloyd and Bradley cousins in Baltimore. A memorial service will be held at Lovely Lane Methodist Church on June 22 at 11AM, followed by interment at Greenmount Cemetery.
