James HOLMES

HOLMES , James James Holmes died on January 22, 2013 at Four Seasons Hospice Care in Flat Rock, NC. He was 96. Dr. Holmes was born on April 29, 1916 in Baltimore, MD. He grew up in Maryland and Virginia and earned a bachelor's degree in arts and science at the University of Virginia; a master's degree in chemistry at Georgia Tech University; and his doctoral degree in chemistry at Rice University. His brother, Rutherfoord Holmes survives him, along with his son, James Tilghman Holmes, his daughters, Julia Goldsborough McLaughlin, and Rosalie Holmes Anderson, and his four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Helena Johnston Holmes, his wife of over 50 years, passed away in 1996. Dr. Holmes worked for Humble Oil Company in Houston, TX; the National Defense Research Council in Princeton, NJ; Johns Hopkins University in MD; Rohm and Haas in Philadelphia, PA; and The Houdry Process Corporation in PA. He retired from E.I. du Pont de Nemours Company in Wilmington, DE in 1979 having worked in the Plastics Department at the Experimental Station and in the Patents and Contracts Division for over 27 years.
A graveside service and burial was held at Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton, MD. Father Greg Powell of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral and Dom Julian Stead of Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, RI, officiated at the service. Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newman Funeral Home in Easton, MD handled funeral arrangements.
