John Krebs(1942 - 2014)



John Hanson Krebs, of Nantucket, MA, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan 7, 2014, in Sanibel Florida at the age of 71.

He was born on October 17, 1942 in Baltimore, MD to Leon A. and Margaret B. Krebs. He was a graduate of Towson High School and Hobart College. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam as a French linguist and intelligence officer. ¿Upon his return, he moved to Nantucket, where he enjoyed a 45 year restaurant career, characterized by his innate solidarity with the worker's perspective, while charming the public, even occasionally singing to them. ¿

With his wife, Mary Keller, John was an excellent and fearless traveler, spending their winters to travel to London, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, Nepal, India, China, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and most of the Caribbean islands, including Culebra, P.R. where John fly-fished, cooked, swam and relaxed for the last 18 winters.

John is survived by his beloved and devoted wife Mary Keller of Nantucket, his sister Susan C. Krebs of Los Angeles, his beloved aunt, Mary McCrae Boyden of Mt Washington, his uncle, John Hanson Boyden and wife Ann of Chestertown, his cousin Joseph Ponce and wife Anne of Santa Fe, NM and his many cousins in the U.S. and Switzerland. John was very proud of his Swiss heritage.

There will be a celebration of John's life in late May on Nantucket.
