Peacefully on December 26, 2012 in Keyser, WV, after suffering from a broken hip and subsequent stroke. Born in 1920, Phil was the only son of the late Philip V. Tilden, Sr. of Philadelphia and Olive C. (Phillips) Tilden of Kingston, Jamaica. Mr. Tilden attended Friends Select School in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania for mechanical engineering. He entered the US Navy
in early 1942 serving with distinction in naval aviation and anti-submarine units throughout the Second World War. He met and married, until they were parted by her death 35 years later, his first love, Mildred Elizabeth Bower, of Salisbury, in 1944 while she was completing nurses training. Mr. Tilden was instrumental in the development of key naval aviation tools, such as aircraft arrester systems and the steam-powered catapult. His pre and post war career included lofting, drafting and mechanical engineering positions at many pioneering corporations including Glenn L. Martin Company, Chance Vought Aircraft, Aircraft Armaments Incorporated, Van Zelm Associates, and the Sikorsky Corporation. Mr. Tilden was the beloved husband of 30 years to Ethel Coleman Tilden, of Baltimore; devoted father of Kay Elaine Tilden, Philip V. Tilden III, Jill Amy Kraft, and Jay Ammon Tilden; devoted stepfather to Lee Coleman, Susan Moody, Nancy Parsons, and Patricia Gardner; Phil was a grandfather to Jeremy, James, Josh, Phil, Matt, Ashly, Addison, Alexandra, Travis, Paul, Beth (Rosie), Jake; and a great-grandfather to Anna, Lillian, Juliette, Brenden, Eli, and Mica'.
Mr. Tilden requested no funeral or service and the family will respect his wishes. The family will gather this spring near the former Chincoteague Naval Air Station (now NASA's Wallops Island), which was one of his duty assignments and where he was stationed when he met Mildred, to commemorate his passing in private. We ask all who knew Phil to think upon his memory, smile, and tell a joke to a loved one, a friend, or a stranger. Donations in his honor may be directed to the American Red Cross or a suitable
