ACKERMAN, SR. , Thomas W. THOMAS W. ACKERMAN, SR., a lifelong educator and dedicated family man, died on March 13, 2010 at his home in Baldwin. He was 63 years old. A native of Baltimore, Mr. Ackerman attended Loyola-Blakefield where he was an all-state basketball player. He graduated from Loyola College in 1968 and later earned a Master's Degree in Mathematics at Morgan State University and a Master's Degree in Education at Loyola College. Mr. Ackerman possessed a strong passion for teaching and coaching. He taught and coached basketball at Calvert Hall College from 1969-1978. In 1978 he moved to Harford County to embark on a career of teaching and administration that spanned more than three decades. He was awarded Assistant Principal of the Year for the State of Maryland in 1994 while at Joppatown High School. He later served as principal at Joppatown High School when they were named a national blue ribbon high school in 1997. He also served as the principal of C. Milton Wright High School and worked for the Board of Education until his passing. Mr. Ackerman enjoyed exploring the world and taking on new challenges. He earned his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying with friends and family. He was an avid traveler and sports enthusiast. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Mary Geraldine Ackerman and their four sons Thomas, Jr., Michael, John and Christopher. He is also survived by his mother Mary Ackerman, sisters Collette Ackerman and Bernadette Benninger and five grandchildren.
There will be a receiving of friends at the Schimunek Funeral Home of Bel Air at 610 W. MacPhail Road (Route 24) on Monday March 15 from 5-8 p.m. A service will be held at the Carmelite Monastery on Tuesday, March 16 at 11 a.m. to commemorate his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Mr. Ackerman's memory can be made to the GBMC Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute, 6701 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21204 or the Carmelite Monastery at 1318 Dulaney Valley Road, Baltimore, MD 21286.
