Ryan Cotterell Obituary

COTTERELL , Ryan G. On May 16, 2012, Ryan George Cotterell , a retired business man and longtime resident of Catonsville, died. He was 94. Born in Baltimore, Ryan lived with his mother and four siblings on Mt Royal Ave. They were members of Corpus Christi Church, where he served as an altar boy. After graduating from the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he worked for the Glenn L Martin Company. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1942, and was stationed for the duration of the war in England. He worked for various Baltimore-based companies after the war until, in 1971, he established Fairfield Medical, where he served as President until his retirement in 1984. Ryan took great pleasure in his family and friends, and was a fine raconteur. He was a wood worker and craftsman, who made furniture in his basement workshop. He enjoyed sailing and spent many happy hours on the Chesapeake. Mostly, he loved going to the ocean, where for years he pitched his umbrella in Bethany Beach. He was predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Border Cotterell, and by his wife of 12 years, Florence Bonney Roden Cotterell. He is survived by his sister, Sr Dorothy Cotterell, by his two sons, Tom (Gina) and John (Dianna), and his daughter Jane Velker (John), as well by three grandchildren, Jake Velker, Ryan Cotterell, and Margaret Cotterell, of whom he was very proud. He is survived as well by seven step-children, and by many nieces and nephews.
The viewing will take place at the Sterling-Ashton-Schwab-Witzke Funeral Home on Sunday, May 20, from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Mark Church in Catonsville on Monday, May 21, at 10 AM. The family asks that donations be made to Gilcrest Hospice in lieu of flowers.

I have so many happy memories of my Uncle Ryan. I always enjoyed his company whether it was sharing drinks and conversation with family in the living room, riding with him on country roads in his MG, or taking him shopping for last minute Christmas presents for Betty. On one visit, he welcomed me to Catonsville with neatly arranged magnetic letters spelling "welcome bag and baggage" on the refrigerator. Ryan was always interested in what was going on in Toronto. He wanted to be kept up to date on the Harding's family business, and he was keen to share his successes at Fairfield Medical. Ryan loved his workshop and tolerated Merritt's scolding for it being less than tidy. I miss Ryan's dry wit, intelligent conversations, and his sincere interest in family and friends.
