Charles Edward WEHLAND Notice

Charles Edward Wehland, of Raleigh died July 8, 2016 at Transitions Life Care Hospice Home after a period of declining health. He was born March 29, 1930 in Baltimore, MD to Charles Herman Wehland and Margaret Turner Wehland and lived most of his life in Howard County, MD. A hard working, loving and devoted husband and father, he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jane Best Wehland; children and their spouses, Charles T. Wehland and Gina L. Tabacchi of Chicago, IL, and Jane L. B. W. Patterson and Dwayne E. Patterson of Raleigh, NC; and grandchildren, Margaret J. Patterson, Anne C. Patterson, Ava F. Wehland and Vivian G. Wehland. He received a BA from the University of Maryland in 1952 and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1955. He had many fond memories of his time in Charlottesville and was thrilled when both of his children attended the University for their undergraduate degrees. After completing required military service, he practiced law for over 40 years. During his legal career he was a District Court Judge, Assistant State's Attorney and State's Attorney for Howard County. He was a Director of Carroll Community Bank in Sykesville, MD for many years and continued to serve on the Board after his retirement and subsequent move to Raleigh, NC in 2004. A deeply religious man, he was an active member of the Vestry of Grace Episcopal Church. He was very involved in his local Rotary Club, served on the Board of Trustees of both St. Paul's School and St. Paul's School for Girls in Brooklandville, MD and was President of the Howard County Historical Society. He was a member of the Order of Founders and Patriots of America, the General Society of Colonial Wars and the Sons of the American Revolution. After moving to Raleigh, he was a faithful member of Church of the Nativity and enjoyed spending time at his beach house. He happily hosted many parties for friends and family and will be remembered for a love of antiques, delicious crab cakes, an ability to find a good bakery, pampering the family dog and a fondness for 'a whisper more' of chardonnay. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, July 12 at Church of the Nativity, Raleigh, NC, The Rt. Rev. Edwin F. Gulick Jr., celebrant. A graveside service will be held at 10:45 am on Thursday, July 14 at Meadowridge Memorial Park in Elkridge, MD. A reception will follow at Grace Episcopal Church Family Life Center, Elkridge, MD. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 6725 Montgomery Rd., Elkridge, MD 21075; or Transitions Life Care, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
