Earl L. FOX Notice


Earl LeRoy Fox, 90, former Mathematician at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab, loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle, dear friend, died peacefully at home in Baltimore, Maryland on March 11, 2014. Mr. Fox was born May 14, 1923 in Scranton, PA. The family later moved to Ardmore, PA. He attended Middlebury College in Vermont prior entering the Navy in World War II. He served from 1943 to 1946, receiving a commission as Ensign and serving as the Navigator of the Assault Transport APA 87, U.S.S. Niagara. In 1947, he received a B.A. in philosophy from Franklin and Marshall College, followed by an M.A. in philosophy in 1951 from the University of Pennsylvania and, in 1970, an M.L.A. from The Johns Hopkins University in the history of ideas. Mr. Fox married the former Ellen Brewster Latimer (Dec'd). The marriage ended in divorce, but their friendship remained until her death in 2007. He joined the APL in 1956 as an Associate Mathematician - Operations Research Trainee and became a member of the Senior Staff several years later while working the Central Laboratory Assessment Division on various naval defense problems. He retired in 1989 and moved to Baltimore, where he enjoyed hiking and photography. He is survived by his loving daughters and their spouses, Nance Fox and Butch Bente; Jane and Craig Weisbaum, his devoted sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Milt Bradley of PA, cherished grandchildren Jessica and Jared Crain, Emily and Mark Shank, Jonathan Weisbaum, and adored nieces and nephews, Mark Bradley and Gale McNelly, Tim & Kathy Bradley, Liz and John Pritz, Lauren & Jared Perssons, Meghan Bradley, Tyler Pritz and Connor Pritz. A private memorial service was held Sunday, March 30, 2014. Memorial donations can be made to the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, Druid Hill Park, 1876 Mansion House Drive, Baltimore, MD 21217-9911, where Mr. Fox loved to walk, take photographs and ponder the richness and wonder of the universe.
