Rear Admiral Edward John Hinman MD, MPH, FACP, USPHS, retired, was called from this earth in March of this year. Dr. Hinman had spent over fifteen years bravely fighting Parkinson's disease before succumbing to pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and all that knew him to be a kind, loving man and devoted husband. Dr. Hinman was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in November 1931. He received his Doctorate in medicine from Tulane University in 1955 and his Master in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University in 1971. He began his career with the United States Public Health Service in 1955 and retired in 1978 from his final position, Assistant Surgeon General and Director of the Division of Hospitals and Clinics. He worked with several HMO's and community health centers in the Baltimore/Washington area including the Group Health Association and Total Health Care Inc. before his final retirement in 2001. Dr. Hinman is survived by his wife of 61 years Jean R. Hinman; children Cynthia, Alan and David; brother Alan R. Hinman and grandchildren Andrew, JD, Sam, Quinn, Sarah and Emily. A memorial service will be at the Charlestown Retirement Community May 21. In lieu of flowers a donation to of Parkinson's Research would be appreciated.
