Francis (Frank) Joseph McDermott, died peacefully October 6, at Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Frederick, MD surrounded by his family. He was born on January 22, 1929, in Midland, Maryland and was the son of the late Dr. Michael J.McDermott and Edna M. Cowan-McDermott. His family moved to Baltimore in 1937 where Frank graduated from Mount St. Joseph High School and Loyola College. His father, "Doc McDermott" practiced family medicine out of a home office on Poplar Grove Street in West Baltimore. His mother, Edna was a descendant of John Cowan of former Old Baltimore Cowan Funeral Home. Frank served in the Naval Reserves during the Korean War. An avid swimmer, he had a long and successful career as an agent with Allstate Insurance in Towson. He was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Texas, MD and was active in many Catholic organizations throughout Baltimore. He was a former resident of Pine Valley and Mercy Ridge retirement community, both in Timonium. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Joan Kunz McDermott, Ph.D.,daughter Maureen and husband John of New Oxford, PA, son Michael J. McDermott and wife Wendy of Sandy Springs, MD, daughter Mary Kay and husband Edward of Greenwich, CT, and daughter Teresa and husband Steven of Ijamsville, MD. He is also survived by five granddaughters, one grandson, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his sister Edna Boggan and brothers Joseph, Cowan and William McDermott. He donated his body to the Maryland State Anatomy Board for medical research. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on November 28th at the Carmelite Monastery, 1318 Dulaney Valley Court in Towson. Final interment will follow at a later date at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
