John J. McQuade

Notice Condolences

MCQUADE , John J. John J. McQuade , retired Telephone Company Manager and World War II veteran died on the 17th day of May 2013 at the age of 90. He and his wife of 65 years, the former Jane Davern, resided at the Oak Crest Retirement Village, Parkville, MD since 2000. Prior to moving to Oak Crest, they lived for 45 years on Woodbourne Avenue in Baltimore. Born In Baltimore, Mr. McQuade attended Saint Mary Star of the Sea Parochial School in South Baltimore and graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in 1940. He attended the Texas A&M and Purdue Universities while a student in the U.S. Army specialized training program in 1943, then he was assigned to the 368 Combat Engineer Battalion as a platoon sergeant for duty in Europe. After the war, Mr. McQuade joined the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in 1947 as a lineman and cable splicer's helper. During the post war expansion of telephone service, he became a salesman and sales manager and later conducted sales training seminars at the Bell Atlantic Corporation. When he retired in 1985, he was an in-house management consultant at the Verizon Corporation. An active community volunteer, Mr. McQuade served two terms as president of the Hampden-Midtown Kiwanis Club, in addition to being twice president of the Swan Lake Swim Club. He also served on the faculty at the Sheppard-Pratt Learning Center. He was among the founders of the Maryland Chapter American Society for Performance Improvement. He was a director of the Maryland Society for Sight. During his retirement he was a volunteer photographer for the National Park Service at Fort McHenry and, while at Oak Crest, he served on the Resident Advisor Council. In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by a son, Brian J. McQuade and his partner Helene Cooper, Stephanie Fetsch and her husband Martin, Claire Mackey and her husband Juan; and three grandchildren: Michael Fetsch, Timothy Fetsch and Jordan Mackey; and one great grandchild, Ellie Fetsch.
Friends may call at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, Inc. 1050 York Road, (Beltway Exit 26) on Wednesday, May 22nd from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Oak Crest Chapel on Thursday, May 23 at 2PM. There will be a brief viewing at Oak Crest before the Mass at 1:30PM. Interment at St. Mary's Cemetery, Homeland Ave. on Friday, May 24 at 10AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Crest Village Benevolent Care Fund, 8800 Walther Blvd, Baltimore, MD 21234.
